"Greening" the MLS

As green building becomes main stream, the Traverse Area Association of REALTORS® (TAAR) has added searchable green building program certifications, ratings, and green building features to its Multiple Listing Service.

TAAR, with technological support from the Home Builders Association of the Grand Traverse Area (HBAGTA) Green Build Grand Traverse Committee, has developed additions to its MLS.  These additions allow sellers to list homes, commercial buildings, and developments that have been certified or rated by one or more of the major Green Building Programs, including LEED, NAHB Green, Energy Star, and HERS.

The listing of third party certifications or ratings gives buyers credible information with which to make sound buying decisions.  The feature additions (such as, high performance mechanical systems, low VOC paint, adhesives, caulks, other indoor air quality features, water saving plumbing devices, energy saving building envelope features, and dozens more) allows owners to list what they believe to be recognized green building features of their homes, buildings, or developments.

HBAGTA executive director, Kathy Maisonville, believes the greening of the MLS is a major step toward bringing green building into the mainstream of the industry.
